Critical Care → CCP - Basics

G. Ventilation basics

Description
Mechanical ventilation is a complex medical intervention. Understanding the art of it makes a huge difference in patient care but the multitude of different ventilation methods; pressure, volume, flow and resistance curves look so scary...
In this course, we bring mechanical ventilation to your hands: clear, easy and simple. You will understand the different ventilation modes, controlled, assisted (PCV, CMV, IMV, SIMV, P-Support, V-Support, IRV, HFJ, etc) and all the other ventilator settings (PEEP, trigger, alarms, I:E, FiO2, et). It is not rocket science and we will blissfully ignore of things which will not be necessary for your every day clinical practice (unless you are a specialized intensive care consultant dealing with difficult ventilation!). We also talk about the risks, side effects and complications of mechanical ventilation. We will use a number of clinical scenarios and will discuss the necessary monitoring of ventilated patients as well.
This course is recommended for trainee doctors in critical care, critical care paramedics and advanced practitioners.
